Stephen J. Drotter is Chairman and co-founder of the Leadership Pipeline Institute and has hands-on involvement in the research and development of the next generation of global pipeline solutions.

 
 

Professional Career

Steve is Chairman of The Leadership Pipeline Institute which is dedicated to advancing the knowledge of and practices for developing leaders for current and future positions at all levels of an organization. Consulting teams in countries around the globe pursue this goal.

For almost 50 years, Steve has been working with succession and leadership development as an internal leader of the work and as an executive consultant with businesses, big and small, around the world. He has completed over 50 enterprise level CEO succession plans, conducted over 1,500 executive assessments of succession candidates for the senior most positions, and taught hundreds of programs to thousands of line managers and human resources practitioners. He is the author of The Performance Pipeline and co-author of international best seller The Leadership Pipeline, The Leadership Pipeline Revised and Updated., The Succession Pipeline and The Succession Planning Handbook for the Chief Executives.

Steve has been working with succession planning since 1968. His foundation for this work started when he became one of the early practitioners at GE and helped to develop and apply their world leading succession process. Based on his work at GE he was recruited to INA which had major insurance, health care delivery and investment banking businesses. He ran Human Resources until INA merged with Connecticut General to become CIGNA. After the merger he had an operating role as President of the CIGNA Service Company. From there he went to Chase Manhattan Corporation as Head of Human Resources for this global financial services company. At both INA and Chase Manhattan he was a member of the Corporate Policy Committee. His focus remained on succession and leadership development to improve current and future performance for the businesses and its leaders. These global leadership positions helped him evolve his understanding of the requirements for effectiveness beyond product companies to financial services and health care

He started Drotter Human Resources in 1985 and focused on succession, organization, executive assessment and leadership development to share what he had learned. He has served over 100 companies on 5 continents in 37 countries. Although he has worked on executive succession at leading companies like Marriott, Citigroup, Goodyear, BHP, Gap, Westpac, DeBeers, Chase Manhattan, Bristol Myers Squib, GE, Ryder and many others he has a special interest in small business succession and leadership development.

Steve has a degree in Economics from Amherst College and is a graduate of GE’s Human Resource Management Program
